“Gooooooooood morning, Vietnam! Hey, this is not a test! This is rock and roll! Time to rock it from the Delta to the D.M.Z.!” It’s 6 a.m. in 1965 and Adrian Cronauer (played by Robin Williams) starts his career in a military radio station in Saigon during the Vietnam war. With excellent humor and good music he quickly wins all the soldiers hearts but not all the authorities.
“Good Morning, Vietnam”
is a movie about war but more than that it’s a movie about one man’s fight against the war and the only weapon he has is his radio program. The movie is based on a real person, but it’s actually more of a solo of Robin Williams. Even though it’s his first big role, it seems as if he has been acting in movies for all his life. Notice that Williams improvised all the broadcasts!
One of the most famous parts of the movie is the unforgettable Louis Armstrong’s “Wonderful World” segment, where the song is contrasted with the horrors of the war. This part has been quoted often in many different movies.
And last but not least - this sixties soundtrack
with all the broadcast clips is almost as great as the movie itself.
